So our family is getting into caring for farm birds of all sorts this year. One of which is an adorable little Cayuga duckling.

I was just wondering as to how old before they get their feathers in?

Our chicks are all almost feathered, but our little duckling has no real feathers. He has the tail feathers (kind of) but not a whole lot.

He has bald spots above his wings, which I heard was normal.

We got him (and all our other birds) on the 23 of March.

Also what is recommended for letting them be in water?

Did you do much research before getting the birds to be sure they would work out in your environment? I would suggest getting a good book on waterfowl as there is far more information that you will need about caring for them properly.

Jungle is right about the book. Storeys Guide to Raising Waterfowl, available in most feed supply stores , is one of the best.
First, I hope you have more than just the one duckling. It's not going to relate too well to chickens & has very different needs.
The feathering is probably being delayed if it's being kept under the high heat lights that chicks require. A 50W bulb is adequate if kept at room temp. Ducklings can be allowed supervised swims from day 3, as long as they can get out & dry under a lamp before they look wet.
The medicated chick starter you're probably using is fine for several weeks. At about 5 weeks, it can be switched to a grower pellet. Less waste & less wet mash that can sour & be lethal. The only ''treats'' needed as it grows are fresh greens such as DARK leaf lettuces, dandelions & ideally, access to grass. Spinach is not recommended, although a leaf or 2 occasionally is fine.

This is Elcinator. I'm having issues w/ my other account atm.

Anyway. It's my mother who's really in charge of everything (tho I am a competent 19 year old). And as far as I know she's done quite a bit a research. My parents refuse to get any new animal w/o first knowing what they're getting into.

We only however did get one duckling because we didn't want to end up with two drakes, and the place we got our poultry from only sexed the chickens.

So how old till I should start allowing the duckling access to grass?

And if I separate the duckling from the chickens, would we need to get another duckling? And would a newborn be ok as day olds are all we can get. We're mainly concerned about gender. :???:

Ducklings can be on grass at any time as long as it won't get chilled & is protected.

It will be more content with a companion. As long as there isn't a huge size difference , another can be added safely.

Well as for size difference, he's probably a good 6 inches tip of tail to chest and weighs 6-7oz.

Also if we got another chick, would there be consequences if they both ended up drakes?

No problems as long as there's nothing to squabble over.
