I had chickens hatch about three weeks ago. They reside in southern Ohio and the temps are pretty cold. I know that they need to be fully feathered before I can put them outside. My question is this: Other than a coop to go into, do they need any extra kind of heat? Thanks

I provide any of my young birds with a red spot light hung about a foot off the floor. This gives them the option for a warm spot if they need it. Its just safer that way rather than lose a bird to the cold temps.

This time of year I would make sure they had a heat source at least untill they were fully feathered ---like around 3 months old--and then make sure they have a wind break--how would you like to be in the cold with no way to escape the bitter wind?--If you are going to have them you may as well do right by them! :? Wow....that's why I asked! I thought I WAS doing the right thing. They are still in my house under a heat lamp.

ya know, the way it has always felt to me is if there is no wind it doesn't matter how cold. I'TS THE WIND!!

The wind will leach body heat faster than in non windy conditions but if its cold its still cold and will leach body heat just the same. It simply happens at a slower pace.

and with birds the wind can ruffle the feathers, making them less effective as the wonderful insulation that they are. ~gd
