Hi, Has anyone owned both Red Star and Black Star hens?? If so how are they different? Does one lay more eggs, or friendlier? Thanks, Joyce Danner.

The red star is a rhode island red cross and the black stars is a barred rock cross they are both friendly and lay good either one is a good choice for layers

Um, they're both Rhode Island Red crosses. In both crosses a Red roo is used, be it a RIR or New Hapshire Red. With the Red Sexlink a white hen is used, and with the Black Sexlink you use a barred colored hen(Barred Rock, Silver Laced Wyandotte, etc). I think they both have good dispositions. Mine did anyway.

I hope they are good. I just ordered 2 RIR Roos, 1 New Hampshire Roo, 1o White rock hens, 10 Barred rock hens, 10 delaware hens , 6 cuckoo marans st run and 4 araucana hens. I also have a dozen black copper marans eggs comeing to hatch out in the incubator. I want to have a few each of different colored eggs and I have some people localy that want sex-link chicks. I hope I am not over loading myself. I will be looking for lots of tips. I have had some RIR hens and some red sex-links and they laid like crazy and were nice. Good luck to all this coming year. I think lots of people are going to be looking for eggs and poultry. Later dave in NC

I will say they are very good layers. even though I don't care much for the breed, I would take red or gold star over black, because blacks are evil  and don't dress out very well. the other two have a better disposition and they dress out a lot nicer.

I will remember that when I start breeding mine. I didn't know that it made a difference which way you breed them. I am so glad I come to this site.

I found them wonderful birds at everything - they were good out free range, they did well penned up and they well exceeded my expectations as far as feed consumption and egg output... can't go wrong with them imo

i got mine from mcmurray hatchery, it might be different from different suppliers

Just for clarification, these are not breeds but are a hybrid line.

I had some blacks stars and they were good layers and werent feed hogs. One was nice and the other had a bad tempermant. Kinda like Jackal and Hyde.
