Should I be concerned? How will it come out, if ever? Thanks for any help.

How big of a rock was it? Ducks normally swallow grit to grind up food in their crop.

Sorry, but you're mistaken. Waterfowl don't have a crop like landfowl, just an expandable esophagus. The size of the ''rock'' will determine if it can pass through the ducks system.

I believe they do swallow small gravel and pebbles to grind up food though. Right?

Yes, in the gizzard.

Hi, everyone. I just looked at a ruler and the rock was no less than a 1/2" wide and 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" long. I know they eat grit and I mix crushed oyster shells with their food. I always look at the rocks while the ducks are playing in the creek. I never leave them alone down there. When I laid this rock in my hand, Big Beak appeared ,grabbed it, and swollowed it.

It has been 4 days now, how is your drake doing? Did he pass the rock, is he eating and drinking normally? ~gd

Big Beak seems to be doing just fine. I guess it just takes a few days to see a problem from this? Thank-you for asking goosedragon. Your 2009 kind and gentler person is working for you.

I have seen my geese take in some really big stones, not as big you described for Big Beak, usually they are too big for the gizzard and they end up passing them in a day or so but a goose is bigger than a duck.~gd

It's amazing what ducks will swallow. As a kid, growing up on the farm, we used to raise Muscoveys and I once found a quarter in the gizzard of a drake we butchered for the table. On another occasion, I found a nail in the gizzard that had just about perforated the gizzard. By the way, the quarter had been in the gizzard for some time. You could just make out Washingtons profile if you tilted the quarter to the sun at just the right angle. The acid from the proventriculus and the grinding of the gizzard wore off the details.
