View Full Version : Call duck with sinus infection

I have a call drake that I was hoping to show in April - but in looking him over yesterday I noticed one cheek was puffier than the other. It's fluid filled, between his eye and bill, just where the sinus is. I assume it's a sinus infection. He has a very slight amount of discharge on his shoulder feathers (wiping) but none from his eyes or nostril when he's just running around the yard. He's otherwise happy, good appetite, talkative and very active. No sneezing.
What would be the best way to treat the little guy? Many years ago I dealt with mycoplasma (on a different property, none of the same birds as I have now - years in between depopulation and restocking), and I'm terrified of getting something like this again. He has been isolated from all other birds since I got him last October. Can I draw off the fluid and bring it to my vet for culture?
Thanks, and cheers!

Swollen sinuses are a common thing in Calls. It's not a serious infection unless the normally clear fluid is milky & thick. Then 4-5 days on Baytril usually clears it. Meanwhile, just press forward, toward the nostril & squeeze it out. There was no reason to isolate the bird for months. It's not contagious & is localized...doesn't spread to other parts of the body.
Mycoplasma is a landfowl problem. Waerfowl don't get it.

LOL. He hasn't been isolated for this reason - the calls have been in my tenant's fenced yard because they'd get stomped flat by the 60 or so turkeys and chickens (grin). They both had cage fatigue and cracked feet when I got them, so a bit of ground time on their own was called for, and he enjoys them and it was convenient to let them run around there. The swollen sinus is new, just the past day or so.
Is the tendency to sinus impaction due to their short bill and round head? Would assume so, just curious. Do you use Baytril injectable or the tabs crushed? The tabs are easier for me to get, probably have some around here somewhere. What's the dosage for calls?
Thanks, and cheers!

I don't worry unless it gets very swollen & the discharge is discolored. Do you use Baytril injectable or the tabs crushed? The tabs are easier for me to get, probably have some around here somewhere. What's the dosage for calls? 2.27% tabs...1/2 a tablet daily for 5 days. Strong antibiotic. Use only if necessary, not as a precaution.
Thanks, and cheers!

We have a call duck with the same problem, and were told to use baytril.
Where can you get Baytril? It seems like here in NY we can only get it from a vet, and they want to charge us $75 to see the animal.
Is there some poultry supply place that we can order it from?

http://www.firststatevetsupply.com/ It won't be cheap there either. As I stated above..it's a powerful antibiotic & SHOULD NOT be used unless the bird has a serious infection. A puffy cheek & clear discharge is not serious.

Thanks for the link, Evy. I looked at their online store, but can't seem to find it. Does it have another name?

Must have discontinued it. Generic name is Enrofloxacin. I checked with Foy's & they removed it, as well. Guess a vet is your only option. Tylan 200 is an OTC antibiotic, but it's an injectable that works okay for respritory problems, which this isn't. For a minor sinus swelling, I simply squeeze it out daily if the bird's going to be shown. Otherwise, ignore it & it usually goes away on it's own.
