(I don't know if this or the chit chat forum is the appropriate place to post this so I did it in both  )

I haven't been on TPC for awhile and I don't know if this new magazine has been brought to the forums attention yet (I didn't find anything in search). I saw a thread about it in another forum BYC (backyard chickens) and thought I would check out their website and it looked like a good publication so I got a subscription. Well, I got my first issues last week (they already have 3 out) and they are pretty good. The price tag is $49 yearly but it is a monthly periodical not bi-monthly so it is still reasonably priced. Just wanted to share the good news.

Check it out! http://www.fancyfowlusa.com/

I think its quite high priced for what you get--hopefully they will improve as time goes on. The part I like best is the section that Dr. Peter Brown has covering diseases--very informative!--just my 2 cents worth. Greg

Greg,

Peter isn't a doctor, just a knowledgable supply salesman. The ''doc'' is a nickname.

The editor Terry Beebe told me they are planning several new sections in the future and he is open to suggestions. If you'd like to see something not currently featured don't hesitate to contact him. He's very friendly.

One of my suggestions was to put in a "Coops" section since I am always interested in seeing other peoples set ups. I'd also like to see more detail regarding the featured breeds such as egg color, egg size, average # laid yearly and personality (does/doesn't like confinement, high strung and so on) to name a few.

There are so few poultry magazines available, it's in our best interests to encourage their continued growth :)

I do like "Backyard Poultry" and of course get the Poultry Press. Those and several breed club newsletters and the internet pretty much take care of my poultry information needs.

I have bought several issues of the UK version of this magazine. I was fairly impressed.
I have also reviewed the online copy of an issue. It has a European flair - They refer to what we call Polish as Polands for example.
They have quality photographs on quality glossy paper. The articles seem to be adressed more to the interests of serious standard bred poultry people. Of course any backyard poultry person should be listening and taking notes when Peter Brown is talking. Unless he is talking about national politics.
(Just had to get that one in. Peter and I had a "lively" conversation at Lucasville regarding the presidential candidates. We didn't agree but we are just as good freinds as we ever were. After all - he could be as right as I am or I could be as wrong as he is.)

Anyway- FancyFowlUSA will be at the upcoming OHIO NATIONAL promoting their publication. I'm sure they will have sample copies and a be there to listen to what the readers are thinking. Wouldn't suprise me if they have a "show special" subscription price.

I think it will be worth the price they are asking.

I subscribed to Fancy Fowl USA a couple of months ago as per Cheryl Barnaba's request. It is a quality product that is still evolving. It would be like some Americans going to Europe and trying to cover their poultry world. The good thing is they are trying very hard and are open to constructive opinions. They are also asking for articles by Americans.

The last issue had an article on proper Old English type and they used English birds...........

In the 80's ( when I believe that the original Fancy Fowl started) they use to give subscriptions away at shows to be raffled or auctioned, so I took it for a few years. Very classy product.

By the way there is a on line magazine that use to cost $16 a year but is now free. Aviculture Europe - http://www.aviculture-europe.nl/indexUK.html
It is a great digital magazine if you like looking at forgien birds. The set ups over in Europe are quite different than ours and the site covers their shows not just in poultry but pigeons. I like their in dept articles on the breeders and the fact that they have varieties and breeds we don't.

Backyard Poultry magazine is American. What's the difference in content? Is it that Backyard Poultry is more for beginners (although some emphasis has been on exhibition poultry in recent months)? I believe one of their recent issues said that their subscription rate has quadrupled in the past two years.
