I have some Dewlap Buff Toulouse Geese and while they are handsome birds they just do not have the heavy structure needed to be competitive with the grays or africans. Is is possible to cross them with exceptional Grays and get Buffs of good type and color? Would this create a bird that would have to be bred over several generations for color once the type was improved??
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bo

Hello Bo. Yes, you can use exceptional Gray Toulouse to improve Buffs. Most peaple that raise Buff Toulouse also have Gray and use both in breeding. There are some nice Buff Toulouse that pop up. If I am not mistaken a Buff Toulouse was Champion Goose at Columbus at the last 'Big One'. Buff in geese is sex-linked. If you use a Buff Gander with a Gray Hen you get Gray sons that are split to Buff and Buff daughters. That is usually the easiest route to get more Buffs and then start working for type from there.

Thanks for the information Hummer. I have since aquired the nice pair of grays and have assimilated them into my flock. They are young but should be ready for late spring breeding.
I'll probably bring my young pair to Shawnee just to let people see some buffs. Right now they are as big as the grays but that will change all to soon.
See ya in a few weeks,
Bo

I have one picture of the buffs out by an old tractor but it is not the best. It is on our website: www.garrettnest.com (http://www.garrettnest.com)
We'll try to get some new closeups posted in the next few weeks now that they are in feather. The older birds are looking good and the young birds are coming on as well.
Thanks for asking.

I understand that if I cross a Grey gander to Buff females... I will get all Greys. But, in these Greys... will both sexes be split for Buff??

Only the sons are split
