I hatched out a few quail for a friend, Well the first two died. So the second batch hatched five, put some ameraucana chicks in with them thinking they are like turkeys dumb. I had one die last night.. The rest seem ok. but so did the last night guy
I have food spread all around and in a feeder.. I see them drink, but not really eat much.
Anybody have any idea what I am doing wrong.. Thank god the friend bought one of my old incubators and I won't have to deal with these things anymore.. Well I have two more batches to hatch out then I am done..
Thanks,
Pam

Quail need a high protein starter feed. I use 28% gamebird starter which is also medicated with BMD for ulcerative enteritis (also known as quail disease). Some people use turkey starter which is also a higher protein. You also want to make sure there is no draft of any kind in the brooder. Using a waterer made for quail that has the smaller water trough is also best as they tend to get in the regular chick waterers and get wet and then die.
I hatch chickens, ducks, guineas, pheasants and quail and the quail are by far the hardest to raise. Best of luck with the other two batches.

Thanks,
Quail are sure different then chickens.. LOL When I opened the bator they popped out like popcorn, They are super fast too.. The four left seem strong so hopefully they will make it.
I have them on a showbird, gamebird feed. Everything else is just fine. It's just going to be a wait and see thing I guess.
Thanks,
Pam

When I hatched quail, one way that really seemed to help them the first couple of weeks was running their gamebird food through the blender. I also used a coffee grinder. This pulverizes all of the crumbs to the point where the tiny chicks can easily ingest.

Yes, they are certainly fast. You've got to grab quickly when you open the hatching tray. I have always compared them to minnows when you put you hand in the brooder as they just run everywhere.
My feed is ground fine to start with, but jrorer's suggestion is good if your feed is not. If you don't have a coffe grinder you can roll over it with a rolling pin to bust it up more. I didn't mention previously that I also like to use electrolites/vitamins in the water for the first few days.
