Did anybody get to go to Crossroads and show ? If so how did you do ? How did you think the judging was ? No names just good , bad or so-so. Did you see any birds that were the knock down bring you to your knees type ? If so what breed and variety were they ? Now I have a question for you scientific folks. If I crossed a chicken with a duck and say got a chuck . It had one chicken foot and one webbed duck foot , if I put it in the pond would it only be able to swim in circles ? Rog

I'll just pretend that I didn't see that last part.
The show was great. Lots of nice geese. The Steinbachers were nice. A very nice Narragansett tom, some other turkeys not bad, some not worth the entry fee. A large Guinea Fowl entry, type was all over the place, nothing outstanding. The ARBA show at the same time was a treat. The cat show, not so much with those crazy cat people.
I got BV with a white African with competition. The show was very well done.

I don't think so, Rog. I can paddle a canoe all over the lake and go anywhere I want to, and I am only using one paddle.

Golly the next time I see a Chuck swimming I will take notes or even better buy a video cam! Are you sure they aren't driven by a prop that retracts back into the vent when they get out of the water?

Maybe they are "green" powered.....momentum caused by water displacement from gas or excrement?

You guys and gals are funny. Thanks for the laughs. I went to the Farmington, NM poultry show yesterday 11/5/11. Four Corners Poultry Club sponsored it. If I remembered the name correctly. It is the only poultry show I have attended so I have nothing to compare it with to say if it was good, better or best. There were 39 adults/farms that entered and about 15 juniors that entered for a total of about 800 birds entered. It was nice to see fighting cock breeds I had never seen and call ducks. Which was the majority of breeds entered. Only 2 breeds of geese shown, the white Chinese and the curley feathered ones. The standard duck category had only white runner ducks. Only one bronze turkey...no other turkeys. The breeds of chickens I raise (eight heritage) were poorly represented....less than half of those breeds were entered. The number of young chickens shown were very limited. There was one dove/pigeon that was of particular interest to me...a...Jocaben or Joceben. Not sure of the spelling...a french word same as a political group from France. It has feathers like hair on its' neck and they fan out around its head like raised hackles curving toward it's face. Very unusual and pretty. There were some in the pigeon/dove class with curly feathers on their bodies and wings. I found it very
interesting for the rare chickens that were shown that I had never seen before.
Glad you got to a show, even a small one. The pigeons were Jacobin. The others you mentioned were Frill Backs. You can GOOGLE any of these for photos & descriptions. The curley geese are Sebastapols ( my favorites). I'd bet some of the Call ducks belonged to a friend, Jim Monk. He bought what I believe were his 1st pair from me about 15 years ago, before they moved to NM.
Next time you go to a show, ask for an exhibitors list. It's a great tool to note who's showing breeds that you like. Addresses & phone numbers give you contact information.

Also, buy an APA Standard. The illustrations are not intended to represent the ideal specimen, but you can get a good idea of what many of the breeds and varieties look like, and put faces to the names so to speak. Better yet, enter a few birds in the next show. You might not know what you're doing, but you can learn from the inside how a show works. Most other exhibitors are happy to help, with sincere, sensible questions. The Jacobins were named for an order of monks who wore large hooded robes, not a political group.

Congratulations, Patrick! We went with American Buff geese. There were 37 entries in the Open class. We got BB. I can't remember who judged them. There were just too many new names in a very short time. I didn't get a chance to catch him after the judging to get his comments, although I did catch up with his clerk. It was a great experience having so much competition! We consider ourselves lucky to find any other geese at a show, let alone that much within the breed! We enjoyed the show, and even managed to sell a trio. I'm sorry we can't take any to sell to Columbus with us, but it's a long ride in a full vehicle, and we still have three more shows this season.
I did look at just about everything there, but my heart is with the waterfowl, and I really enjoyed seeing so many breeds and varieties of Runner ducks. I was also happy that the Steinbachers earned APA recognition. That's a lot of hard work gone into that project!

Have you been whispering bad things to may flock again? That big ole white Leghorn cockerel has been doing bad, bad things to my Khaki Campbell Ducks. I've seen it with my own eyes....."Chucks" in the making. I won't stand for it...I've got enough mutts to feed this winter. He's going to be chicken fricasee....

The ''baddest'' thing I ever came across was our Holland Lop barn bunny & a pullet making Easter eggs ! Then there's my Yellow-Golden pheasant who preens & struts back & forth along the chicken pen. ;-)

The ''baddest'' thing I ever came across was our Holland Lop barn bunny & a pullet making Easter eggs ! Then there's my Yellow-Golden pheasant who preens & struts back & forth along the chicken pen. ;-)
I used to have one muscovy drake that was too fond of the wild bunnys in my yard [never thought of easter eggs] the other drake was more normal and chased the geese with mating in mind, he taught 2 Pilgrims that flying was a good thing!

I used to have a production red rooster that would have his way with my barn cat. The cat learned not to nap out in the open....

Had a frizzled rooster myself that wouldn't leave the ducks alone. Always wondered what the offspring would look like if the deed could get done.

Oh well. I had a friend who had a tom turkey that was enamored with my leg....
I had a friend that could not leave her house by the back door without her drake mounting her boot. Males do seem to have a one tracked mind, even if it is a strange track at times. LOL.

Ain't puberty grand? These are priceless!! Young males will be young males, regardless of species, it would appear. I did have a goose (as in female) who was confused and would make sexual overtures to us once her hormones kicked in. At last that behavior wasn't annoying or embarrassing, and went away when her own kind saw she was "interested". Maybe we shouldn't have named her Walter. *sigh*
Glad to have some nearly 100 cockerels butchered. They have enough hormones for an entire football team.
Bantam roosters must have more than their share based on my little bantams propensity to fight every cockerel he can reach. He has kept several of the bigger cockerels that are housed with the pullets from bothering the "girls" as much as they want. He catches them trying to do their business, hits them from behind knocking them rolling end over end to the ground while managing to get a beak full of feathers. It is a funny sight to see. He is only about 1/4 their size.

Poor Walter :) She was just confused.
But that nasty leghorn was at it again today. He's aweful rough on my ducks. I'll eventually have to do something with him....
