Welcome! What kind of questions do you have? Fire away, I can't help with the waterfowl questions but will be happy to try on the chickens'. And if I don't know I'll be sure to tell you; I'm sure someone else here can if they find the right forum.

This is where you'll get honest, informative answers, not misinformation & stories about which TV shows someones pet chicken watches with them. The folks here are more than willing to give knowledgable answers to serious questions.

"We strongly exhort our community to not jump to conclusions or form judgments based on a few bits of information. Please do thorough research and make decisions based on accurate and unbiased information."
Above is a direct quote from an administrator on that "other" forum. Now go and look at some of the posts on it. If they truly believed in what they wrote above, 90% of the posts would be deleted. If all you want is quantity of posts, and your feelings stroked, with a good deal of stupidity, go there. If you want quality information, stay here.

I tried to help with some information on that "other forum" by posting a link to a site that dealt directly and accurately with a question that had been posed. The administrator deleted my message and let me know that they didn't want any "competition." Apparently their goal is to sell advertising, and to maximize profits they want to show they are getting the most hits/posts possible. Accurate information, despite the rhetoric, is not their primary focus.

I think that you may have hit on something. I couldn't really understand why anyone who's intelligent enough to operate such an involved website, could stand to also be a part of such stupidity. Your theory explains it perfectly. Hollwood wasn't built on accuracy or honesty, but still they prosper by giving the people what they want. Same with most news services, to an extent. I'm all for making money, as much as possible in fact. I like to think that I do it honestly, with a little bit of self respect. I suppose I could make more if I gave up some of my principles. Maybe when I start starving. Otherwise, I'll stay with what I have.

I see one guy on here who is extremely well versed in both commercial and exhibition poultry, try to get on there occasionally and give some honest, accurate help, more tactfully than they deserve, IMO. Sometimes he's mocked and argued with. Most often he's just completely ignored, along with the the other rare sensible posts. A drop of reason in a sea of stupidity, but they'd rather focus on their birds' names and personalities. Anyone notice that they're branching out? God help us, now they're into other types of livestock. Anyone want to start a pool as to how long it takes for someone to ask for diaper patterns for a goat? In the land of BYC....... (Hey, that rhymes with Honalee. That can't be a coincidence.)

I used to get on that site often.

Someone was posting about the nutritional benefits of feeding mice to chickens. I tried to explain nicely - mice carry diseases and this might not be a good idea. I was ignored.

Someone else was posting about needing to wash chickens because they had gotten into something sticky and had it all over their shoulders. I replied that more likely it was nasal discharge, and to isolate, and examine further. I was ignored.

A while later, this same person was warning everyone not to buy birds from someone because they had sick chickens. They had gotten some a few days previous, and now, their chickens were dying. Ummmmm who had the sick chickens.

These people claim to love their chickens, but don't want to learn anything of value. Put a post on there about how to knit a chicken sweater and they are all over it!

I am relatively new to poultry. But my desire to learn is great. I treasure the birds that I have. I enjoy showing. And I have gotten more helpful, specific information here than any of the books or other websites. (Thanks Neil !!!)

The "other" forum doesn't deal with Poultry...it deals with horses, yet powered by vBulletin, like this one is...

TPC rhymes with BYC and Honalee and I am pretty sure that IS a coincidence! (And no, my full name is not Puff the Magic goosedragon!)
