If my birds have fowl pocs should I still vaccinate them or just let the disease run its course? I noticed a chick that was hatched by a game hen that runs free has the disease. My layers are in a secure coop but as we all know mosquitos can go anywhere I am definately vaccinating the layers but, if they are infected besides quarentining(sp) them should I also vacinate them ? I looked over them today and didn't see any signs in the layers but I have not inspected every bird. I will do this tommrow evening and start vaccinating. I have dealt with fowl pocs before but its been so long.. Thanks in advance

dondoyle:

Once the bird has fowl pox, it won't get it again (has immunity). When I vaccinate, I vaccinate all, even the ones I think have had pox. In other words, it will not hurt to vaccinate. The pox I've seen on my birds is always very mild & quick to pass.

When my chicks are raised outside with the hens, I do not vaccinate those chicks as I always assume they come into contact early with mosquitos (daily around here) & therefore pox, so it wouldn't take effect before they encounter it. If you do vaccinate chicks from pox, you will have to vaccinate again with the adult version.
