I've had a pair of Runner drakes for five years--they were brothers and raised together, and very bonded to each other. Something got into my yard and killed one of them this week, and now I feel awful for the one who's left by himself. I want to get him a companion, but I know you're supposed to have three or four hens for each drake, and I don't really want that many ducks--they are just pets, and I already have five chickens for eggs.
Now I'm wondering if I get another drake whether he will bond with it or whether they will fight. My pair would sometimes fight a bit (like over who got to get into their tub to swim first when I changed the water!) but they never seemed to really harm each other. I've also had some trouble with them chasing and 'molesting' the chickens, (mostly just in the spring and early summer) but as I said, I don't think I really want a bunch of female ducks too, so I was hoping I could just find another drake (since I'm sure some people must end up with 'extras' that need homes). What are the chances that they would bond and get along well together?
