Hello All,

Ok, so we finally got electricity to the barn, and we going to get light for the egg layers. My question is how much light and for how long? We have a 16 X 30 room for the layers so what kind of light, fluorescent or incandescent bulbs and how many? I'm planning to use a timer to light the girls, is 12 hours of light enough? I was thinking to wake them early with artificial light, so when the sun goes down they will be roosting already.

thanx glen

I changed from incandescent to fluorescent lighting in a controlled lighted [no natural light]building. Egg production dropped about 80%. I went to full spectrum fluorescent and solved the problem. Early morning lighting will cause the hens to lay earlier. In a cold coop this may be during the coldest part of the day leading to more frozen eggs.
