Hi there,

I'm an architecture student currently working on a scheme introducing a number of coops into a city environment, namely Brighton- on the south coast of England, UK. The goal being providing low food-mile eggs to the population, from self-sustaining coops.

I'm currently at the early stages of putting this project together, and I'm looking for some general guidelines on how much of what I would need to feed them, so I can work out what storage would be necessary!

Initially, I'm looking at a total of around 100 hens, spread between a number of coops.

Just to stress that this isn't a battery project, and animal welfare is paramount to my concerns!

Thanks very much guys, I appreciate your knowledge and advice!

Hi there,

I'm an architecture student currently working on a scheme introducing a number of coops into a city environment, namely Brighton- on the south coast of England, UK. The goal being providing low food-mile eggs to the population, from self-sustaining coops. What ever that is.

An admirable and worthwhile goal.

I'm currently at the early stages of putting this project together, and I'm looking for some general guidelines on how much of what I would need to feed them, so I can work out what storage would be necessary!

Initially, I'm looking at a total of around 100 hens, spread between a number of coops.

Plan on one hundred egg type hens eating no more than 25 lbs of complete feed per day during production. This assumes that they will be maintained at near optimum temperatures.

Just to stress that this isn't a battery project, and animal welfare is paramount to my concerns! The housing of layer chickens in cages is not an animal welfare issue but rather an animal rights issue. Forget about Jamie Oliver's self serving opinion. He dosen't know jack about livestock huabandry. He is a chef, not a farmer.

Thanks very much guys, I appreciate your knowledge and advice!
