Hello,
I took a Muscovy in yesterday. I don't have a clue as to wether it is a male or female or even how to tell with this kind of a duck. Any advice on that would be appreciated.
Also, it appears that it has been scratching the back of his neck and parts of its wing. I am assuming that it has some kind of a bug issue maybe. I have it quarantined as to not affect my other ducks. It also looks a little wobbly on its feet.
Any advice on how to get it back in shape? I have never had to use any kind of a spray or duster on my ducks so what should I get for his mites? Thanks and have a nice day!

I went to tracter supply yesterday and they were very helpful in helping me find some powder to put on it for possible mites.
I would still like any info on how to sex this duck.
Also, how do they along with other breeds of ducks? Thanks
Any one have this breed? thanks

If someone was getting rid of it, chances are it's a drake. They have lots of red caruncles on their face & neck. Ducks have far fewer & are a much smaller bird. They also have crest type feathers on the head that can be raised. Drakes are aggressive breeders, will mate with anything & may injure smaller birds. They're hard to handle, having sharp nails for perching & spurs on the wing joint. Ducks are excellent setters & mothers. Drakes are good to eat.

Drakes only hiss. ducks will sometimes make a quacking noise but mostly hiss. Drakes usually have a hardtime getting off the ground and tend to fly low and slow because of their weight. ducks are usually considerablely smaller and lighter and fly much better. Hopes this helps some. ~gd

I've raised Muscovies. They come in both blue and white varieties and are characterized by red wattles on the head and neck. They are large ducks, quite able to take care of themselves. Drakes will have curled-up tail feathers. This is one of the few (only?) domestic breeds not descended from the Mallard. Offspring from a cross with a Muscovy will be infertile. They have sharp claws, and roosted in trees in the wild state.

Hope this helps!

They don't have "curled up" tail feathers
