This hasn't ever happened to us before. Overnight one of our best pullets has huge amounts of white feathers all over her body. This happened overnight. How and why did this happen. Is it the frigid temps? We have them on plenty of straw. What should we do? Cull her or will she molt out of it? Please help me.
Common to Cayugas. It's why you seldom see ''old females'' entered. By ''old'' I mean anything over 12 months. Some are more prone than others. Your's was probably growing them but hadn't molted her 1st year feathers yet, dropped a lot at once, & surprised you. Nearly all of them get more & more white as they age.

in our experience, the more white a hen has the more green she throws in the offspring. if you dont have the white you wont get that total green color even underneath the wings and on the underside of their tail.
all of our best breeders of indies and cayugas have lots of white, and its funny when people see how green our birds are they dont even consider where the color has come from.
