Just a few thoughts as I am back from the Ohio National Poultry Show!
Kudos and thanks to over 400 exhbitors from all over the US and Canada exhibiting 5300 birds. This show reminded me so much of the big Nationals in 1998 and 2002! Lots of vendors and activities going on all day long!
Waterfowl show was awesome-200 Geese-700 Calls, and lord knows how many Large Ducks!
Call Duck National was impressive and what a well run breed club-hats of the officers and thanks for all your hard work!
Wyandotte, RI Red and Brown Lehorn Nationals were well attended and many a beautiful bird was exhibited!
The Large Cochin Class was one of the best I have seen in many years! I can appreciate all the work it takes to get one of those monsters ready for a show! Enough rambling on, I am sure others will add to this!
Champion Waterfowl-White Call-Art Lundgren
Champion Bantam-Dark Cornish-Henry Mager
Champion Large Fowl and Show Champion- WC Black Polish by Joel Henning (I think)

See ya all back next year and this will be a hard act to follow!

Even though the dust has not settled and many exhibitors and visitors are still making their way home, I don't think that anyone has stopped to think about all the hard work and effort to orchestra such a show of that undertaking. The sky may have been cloudy over Ohio this weekend but Columbus was the bright spot of the state. Erik Markley, Neil Grassbaugh and the rest of the hard working crew went above and beyond to help make the NCBA National a resounding success. On behalf the of the NCBA officers and exhibitors I would like to thank the Ohio National for hosting the NCBA National.

It is always nice to visit with so many poultry friends and meeting new ones. At the show and airport I met visitiors from as far away as Washington State and California. My only complaint is I took a new pair of tennis shoes and almost had a blow out on those and never really got around to visiting with everyone I would have liked to and I don't think I ever made it down all the ailses to look over the birds like I would have wanted to.

Thumbs up to yet another great show,

Hummer

That was you complaining to Brian about your shoes! I was standing there when you breezed by, if I'da known it was you I'dve said hi.

I echo your thanks to the judges and show committee for the OH National, this was just an AWESOME show. We had a wonderful time, sold or found a home for every sale bird we brought (they were flying out of the hall, almost literally), and the kids really enjoyed showmanship and the related youth activities (Lindsay Halbach is just a treasure.) This show sets the gold standard for any other big show out there. Thanks guys and gals!

(p.s. to Matt, I thought that Buff Cochin was to die for!)

Laura, you should have stuck your foot out to get my attention as I was breezing by!!! LOL.You know at poultry shows I tend to be a little quiet and reserved and sometimes it takes a little nudge to bring me out of my shell and get my attention  .

Matt, with those large Buff Cochins anchoring on end of the row and the outstanding large White Cochins line up on the other end of the row is would REALLY be hard to miss that aisle!!!! LOL.

No kidding, I told the breeders that was the best display of LF Cochins I had seen in many years. SO great to see Bill West, Roland Doerr, and Tom Roebuck and others who names slip me exhibiting such a nice batch of birds. As a former breeder of big cochins, I know what it takes to put on good one down let alone several. Enjoyed judging them and could have filled my truck up with many of the 4-5 placed birds:)

... Particularly dinner saturday night!

Littlebit, I will have to agree completely on dinner Saturday night. The good company, food, copious fruity slurries and titillating conversation topics will be quite memorable for a long time to come :o .

I have some pictures from the show up on my blog, so check them out! The show was great, I had a blast! I got to talk to old friends, and make some new ones. The wood trophies and plaques were beautiful! It was also really nice to be able to fill up the car with gas for $1.85! :D

One of the funniest things I saw at the show was right at the end on Sunday morning. A woman was cooping out her old male turkey, who was all puffed up and displaying. She walked him down the aisle in front of her as if he were a dog. It was hilarious! Him puffed up and sniffing/snorting, her just sort of waving her hands to keep him going in the direction she wanted him to.

I swear I'd raise turkeys if I could get over how cute they are. How do you cull such adorable birds?

The champion placings for the 2008 OHIO NATIONAL will soon be posted.
In the meantime here is one of the most impressive birds of the show.

This is probably a dumb question but are there complete photos posted somewhere that show all of the winners? I'd love to see them and to compare what wins to what I am trying to bring up!

I have never shown any poultry but will take some birds, maybe only one, to the NE Poultry Congress in January. More for fun and to see how it is done and meet people kind of thing! Anyone here planning on attending that show?

Acutally Evy, we have made the whole North Eastern Crew honorary Buckeyes as I think they will soon outnumber native Ohioans at the show:)

Does anyone know who won the Pekin Classes?

goosedragon

The last I knew the Pekin were considered heavy ducks which was won by a Rouen with a Blue Muscovy as reserve. At least that is what is posted above.~gd

the person asked who won the pekin class not the heavy duck class....

Rick Hare had some awesome Pekins in the class....but not 100% sure who won the pekin class

Sorry, the word "class" must have confused me, If he had said "breed" I would't have answered since I didn't know. Just for my info the various breeds do make up the classes don't they? So the best Pekin would win Best of Breed and go on to be considered for the Best of the Heavy Duck Class, Right? ~gd

Hare's Pekins came from Royal Oaks from what I understand. Maybe the nicest Pekins I had ever seen. The Rice birds were maybe only better and I wish I had the opportunity back in the day to have seen those birds.

Another New Yorker here. I did not make class champion as the cochins took that, but did manage to get Best of Breed with my white silkie pullet.

Though I have been breeding for nearly 10 years now, I have only been showing a little over a year, and the Ohio National is by far my favorite of the shows I had been able to attend. Looking forward to attending many more shows in the future.

I couldn't exhibit this year due to my mom breaking her wrist then me w/ blood clots/foot fracture. But, it sure was fun Sat. visiting with friends, selling call ducks raffle tickets, and looking at all the beautiful show birds! The Ohio National is my favorite show and I thank my friends for thinking of bringing me along with them. It was a wonderful show! Cathryn
