Hi, I am somewhat new to raising ducks and I have just hatched two Ducklings. One of which is a Pekin duckling that hatched yesterday. It has a not completely developed yolk sac and I don't know what to do. The sac is only a tad smaller than a dime and it is dry now. I had sprayed hydrogen peroxide on the sac a few times to make sure that it wouldn't get an infection. It isn't as fluffy as the other one and not as strong. It can walk and poo so I beleive that is a good sign. I'm am just wondering if any one else has had this happen before and if so what did you do. Please write back ASAP!!

Did you help it hatch? if so, it was not quite ready yet. If the yolk is small it does have a chance if it did not get infection and if the yolk absorbs and does not rupture. All you can do now is make sure the other duckling does not peck at the navel.

I didn't help it hatch. I don't know if it is broken but there is a tiny bit of dried yolk looking substance on its belly. Do you think that the sac will just dry up and fall off? It is already dry right now, It is actually hard.

Your hatcher temperature was too high. Leave it alone & it should survive. If it happens again, use a little antibiotic ointment. Peroxide destroys healthy tissue.

What would happen if the yolk sac had a leak?? I was just wondering because there is dried yolk on it. I don't see were any crack could have been in the sac because it is so dried up.

Sorry to hear he didn't survive. You don't mention if you have any other ducks. If not, now your problem is one lonely duckling. It's not a good time to find more locally, but possibly the big hatcheries could send you more ducklings to raise with it. It's hard on them to be the one and only. It needs company, besides you, otherwise you'll have some problems down the road. Are you planning on raising the duckling indoors until spring?
