Hello all,

I am Arie and I am breeder of the American type of Buff Leghorn Bantams.

I live in the Netherlands.

My English language is not this way well but I will try it. I must translate everything with Babelfish.

Are here some breeders of Buff Leghorn Bantams?

Kind regards Arie

Arie-

I knew and showed Leghorn Bantams against Burt Gaude. I had whites and silvers. His buffs never dominated the whites or browns but he often had the best leghorn other than a white or brown.

I hope tha Dan Honor is seeing this thread.

I belive that Sam Brush also has Buffs.

Never have I seen such tails on Buff males! I can never remember Burt having birds as good as yours, color or confirmation. I do however suspect that your birds are somewhat larger than those here in the States. Very well and nicely done.

Hello Neil,

Sorry for my bad English.

Have you also read my Article http://www.aviculture-europe.nl/nummers/08E06A04.pdf ? My animals descend of the strain of Burt Gaude. They come of Richard L. Stauder. He had them of Danne J. Honour who had them of Burt Gaude. With Dan I have regular contact by means of e-mail.
I have crossed the strain of Burt with the White American type Leghorn Bantam and with the Dutch type Buff Leghorn Bantams. Also I have crossed them with the Large Fowl Buff Leghorns I had several years ago.

This was my best LF Buff Leghorn

I heard of Sam Brush, but we have no contact so far yet.
I like to hear what Sam are its opinion of my animals.

Hello,

februari 4, I have filled up my incubator with eggs of several pairs. I have made a crossing with Buff Leghorn bantam male x 2 Buff Dutch females. Also Buff Dutch male x
Buff Leghorn bantam female.
So I hope that I can improve my American Type Buff Leghorn Bantams to get them smaller.
Also I have layed eggs of pure American Type Buff leghorn Batams in the incubator.
Total 60 eggs in the incubator.

Now only we can wait to they to end up.
I will let you know.

I had ,for a number of years,Mr.Marsh (Pioneer Farm) come to my yards and go over my large Buff Leghorns. The Buff Leghorn bantams I had were from Burt Gaude. They were short and stocky,so Mr.Marsh provided a few of his White Leghorn bantams to outcross with.I had done this prior with large fowl.I was able to tighten the feather, lengthen the thigh and add longer tail length. It required several years to do but I was happy with them as they looked like Leghorns and had style, not being so cobby and squatty.I had good wing carriage and size was close to the Whites.

Burts birds often showed green leg color. (I got around that by being careful which males I used.I knew that sex linkage plays a part,so did not use green leg males.I knew yellow leg males can carry the green leg hidden.Yellow leg females are pure for yellow legs).

I sold a number of settings to Richard the year before Arie got his. Hans had visited me and saw my birds at that time. I think Hans arranged the export for Arie.I sold eggs to Curtis Oakes at that time among other people.I had an offer on all the Buff bantams about 1995 and sold them.I have continued with the large Buffs since the very early 1970's.

P.S.Arie I think you are doing a good job with the Buff Leghorn bantams and I enjoy all our corresponding. It was great to visit with Sam Brush ,Clell ,and Neil ,recently at the Congress Show. I regret not meeting Neil sooner,as we only had a short visit just as he was about to go home.

Hello Dan,

I also enjoy our corresponding. I hope that Sam Brush likes it also to corrosponding with me sometimes. I saw his Buff Leghorn Bantam male on Facebook and I like that bird very much. I hope that I can see more pictures of Sam his Buff Leghorn Bantams. I also like the corrosponding with Keith Bjelland. He have also nice Buff leghorn LF and Bantam.

About the green leg color, sometimes my birds showed green leg color. Only the females. This came up after the crossings with the White American type Leghorn Bantam.

Now I have eggs in the incubator of Buff Leghorn Bantam male x Buff Dutch female and some of Buff Dutch male x Buff Leghorn Bantam female.
Also I have some eggs Buff Leghorn Bantam x Buff Leghorn Bantam.
I am curious how those chicks will see, which leg colour they have, and which colour they get. Perhaps I get more wrong colour in the tail and wings the coming years. I think that I have the type rather rapidly, but that the attention will lie especially at good wing carriage and the leg colour at the outcross with the Buff Dutch

It is an honour for me be possible work with these animals, and know their history. I find it particular that I have a photograph of Burt gaude. I can tell to everyone, and show, where my animals come from.

Thanks my friend.

Arie, i live in north central Oklahoma here in the states. I currently have white single comb leghorn bantams, I have been following this thread with much interest as i have been pondering getting a start in Bantam Buff Leghorns myself. I have contacted Sam Brush in Texas and hopefully within the next three weeks or so will make a trip his way to pick up a trio or two for my start. Your article has been a great source of information and is a great help and has answered many questions for me. I know some of the other posters and will probaly get some pictures put up after i see what i wind up with. thanks, Steven

Hello Steven, I am glad with your response that you will go breed also Buff Leghorn Bantams. It are very nice animals to work with. It demands, however, only some experience with Buff. I get much information of Danne J. Honour and Keith Bjelland. Unfortunately I have too little space. As a result, I can breed no large numbers. I must select too early. That is not always well because as a result potentionele animals go lost. I have been aroused curiosity to the animals which you will pick up at Sam. Do you greet Sam on behalf of me if you are at him? I gladly hear how it goes further ..... Arie

Hello Ronnie, are you also breeding Buff Leghorn bantams? Where are you going to in The Netherlands with vacation? I have a very smal chicken house 4 meters x 2 meters with above 2 of 2 meters x 0.8 meter. I do not know how many bantams I will have in the summer because I must select them very early. You have seen it all in 20 minutes. But maybe you can visit me.

You can sent me an personal message when you are in the Netherlands

Arie, i finally got to meet Sam Brush and pick out some Buff Leghorns this past saturday. I wound up with two males and three females. Very pleased with them, males are very good type and i think good even coloring. Females have outstanding leg color and are laying! I am hoping to hatch a few to see what i learn from what i have read. Sam has a nice place and treated us great, looking to keeping in touch with him and am sure our paths will cross again.Would appreciate any comments regarding the buff color. Will try to post some pictures soon. Steven Androes

Hello Steven, congratulated with your first Buff Leghorn Bantams. I find it very nice to hear that you has a couple beautiful Buff Leghorn Bantams of Sam. With these animals of Sam you have a very well quality Buff Leghorn Bantams. I have received photographs of its birds by means of e-mail. They look very nicely to me. I hope that you will get a couple beautiful chicks. I can't wait to see the pictures.

Arie, hope these pics come thru. I know i have some work ahead of me , but think Sam has me off to a good start. The buff female has good even color and nice wide, long tail feathers but doesn't seem to want to spread them apart, maybe she is a little nervous. The buff male has better type than he is showing and what i think is good color, a little dark in the wing bows. Both are in the standard weight range, but are a little wild, i know they will calm down, as i handle them almost daily. My whites have places for improvement also, female is starting to get a double lop in her comb *which is a no no) but other wise very good type, male looks better than his pic, hard to get them to pose sometimes. Anybody else feel free to let me know what you think. It was 71 degrees here friday and 28 degrees 6 inches of snow with 45 mile wind saturday, welcome to Oklahoma.

Hello Steven,

These are very very nice Buff Leghorn Bantams you have got there.
Also your White Leghorn Bantams are very nice.
I like the colour of that Buff male.
Sam is looking arround for some White Leghorn bantams to cross his Buffs with.
Maybe you can together work on this project to improve the Buffs.
I think that your White female is a great bird to cross with that Buff male.
It costs you a couple years but if you have the place to hold them beside the pure bred then it is a good chance for making the Buffs even better in type and vigor.

I like to hear how the little chicks be.

Maybe you can contact Sam for the White Leghorn bantams he is looking for.

Hi Steve,I am glad you got the Buff Leghorn bantams.I like the buff pair you have pictured. The female has a few traits I really like, length of main tail and length of leg. They do a lot for Leghorn type and style. The color looks decent from the pictures. If you have the room and good luck, raise lots of chicks and let nature help you by providing lots of variation to select from. When I talked with Sam recently he mentioned the lack of stlye and Leghorn type ,mainly due to shortness of tail,thick/cobby body and squattiness/short legs.Burt did a good job originating his strain, but the Rock bantam used for buff color, still plays havic with type,to a degree. One reason I like the female you got so much.My advice is go with Leghorn type and style first, then color, size, wing carriage,comb,earlobes,etc.. Good luck, you are off to a nice start. We are here for you,if we can help do not be afraid to ask. Dan Honour

Arie and Dan thanks for the comments, i am getting one sometimes two eggs a day, i will set this friday evening and see what pops out in 21 days. Since this will be my first experience with this color, i'm going to stay with buff on buff. I have one other female with the same type as the one in the pic, but with a small amount of black smut in her main tail feathers that i intend to use also. Both are like Dan indicated a little "rockish" in the comb area and the other male i have is as well. I don't intend to use him unless i have to. I'm sure i will have more questions and reley on your experiences as well as my own trail and error. thanks in advance for your help. Steven

Just a quick note.If you have others birds I would use them. When you first start it is a good idea to make as many matings using as many birds as you can.It gives you a wider base, wider gene pool.Your birds might be slightly related to begin with so this will allow you to do more with the breeding you currently have. Many people make the mistake of using too few birds and raising too few right from the start.

Yes I know,my point was to use all the individuals you got in some combination. Then you can make use of all the possible genetics .You mentioned you might not use certain birds because of some faults.

Hello Steven,

I think you are right to begin with pure Buff matings to see what the Buff colour do. I agree that it is good to make matings with all of your birds as Dan told you. So you have more chances to get some nice birds you can go further with and you can use for a long time.

I can not wait to see your little chicks.

About your White Leghorn Bantams you can contact Sam. Maybe you can help him with some White Leghorn Bantams he is looking for.

Hello Steven,

We are doing well here. The ash fallout is drifting over here but I do not have any problems with that at this moment. The planes do not fly at this moment. perhaps they can fly tomorrow but that has not been guaranteed.

I hope you have a great hatch and I like to see some pictures or some videos of your little chicks.

Arie, they look very nice and even in color. What do you feed your birds, their finish looks outstanding.I will try to have some photos later of my young stock. Hatched around 40 and have culed very hard. Had an outbreak of side sprigs in 2/3's of the male side of my breeding(is that carried from the female side?). Have a couple of pairs to go with and will see how they finish out. Still have work to do but they look to have good type and even color .lobes and leg color are their strong suit. Steven
