    Default Other pets/livestock

What else do people raise besides poultry? I currently have two Maine coon cats, a parrot cichlid, and as of tonight, sea-monkeys (childhood was calling). I should marry Noah for all the other animals I'd wish to have, but for today this is all I have aside from hens. I'll post some pictures later.

It didn't cross my mind, but if there's any overpopulation I know the cichlid wouldn't object!

    lol good catch Evy.

By the way we have 2 dogs(vizsla and a german shorthair) and as of last friday a potbelly piglet. At some point in the fairly near future we will be adding either a guard bred donkey or a guard bred llama as a first line of defense from big predators.

Good luck with the donkey / llama guards. My neighbor had both in his 1 acre pasture that borders my back yard. A fox took an adult tom turkey from in front of the shed door & couldn't get it through the fence. Maybe the llama & donkey didn't like the turkey or it was after their shift had ended, but neither, judging from tracks in the new snow, made a move to help poor Tom. The llama did do some serious damage to my cat a few years ago.

It is good to hear those stories. I have heard good and bad. I figure if I get something to graze the pasture to keep it down might as well have something that might help in another way.

^ Their hair also sells pretty well, at least around here. My aunt has had llamas for about five years with the goats but they aren't really used for guarding because they're all in at night. They do make for good attractions for her store, I'll tell you that.

if your getting a guard donkey Evy is right they could care less about birds, we run a few jennies and only jennies with our ewes on pasture, only one at a time, preferably introduced to the the intended stock around 8-10 months old or earlier, the only good coyote in that pasture is a flat coyote, if your asking Mable

Besides the chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys & 2 guines we have Dairy goats, Dairy cows, beef cattle including highland, A yak, 3 pigs ( will be in the freezer soon), 4 horses, 5 ponies/&minis, three housedogs as well as a great pyrenese/meremma GD to patrol the farm, 4h rabbits & meat rabbits ( worm farm under the rabbits) barn cats, 2 cockateils, 3 zebra finches , guinea pig, chinchilla, fish tank , and one turtle.
We had a full size donkey and never had to worry with him in the pasture. He was also just fun to have around.

Well, if we are picking this thread up again I'll add my bit. An Anatolian Shepherd Guard dog, a pedigreed pound dog that is probably a terrier/schnauzer mix. 40 pullets...Speckled Sussex, Black Austrolorps, Partridge Rock, White Rock, Barred Rock (1), Buff Cochin (1), Partridge Cochin (1), Silver Spangled Hamburg (1) her cockerel, and Cuckoo Marans and several other cockerels of the BA, PR, SS, CM breeds and one lone Polish, three Silky bantams, two are buff pullets and a 1.5 year old black rooster (he rules the place). Four white Chinese Snow Geese & six brown Chinese Snow Geese & Lady that could be either a brown CSG or an African--small variety. Mallard ducks, Welsh Harlequins, fawn & white runners, Cayuga and Khaki Campbells.

I'd be delighted if I could find homes for the extra cockerels, especially the Silver Spangled Hamburg...even let the pullet go with him. They are beautiful. And the Polish..he's a black and white splash. I hate to butcher them. The fryers I bought are fine for butchering and are not rare or beautiful breeds.

Marmoset, can I come live with you? I love all those pretty birds. I've had parakeets that talked. One had over 400 words in his vocabulary.

Well, besides the chickens and ducks, we've got two Icelandic horses, 1 Fjord gelding, and a Missouri Fox Trotter. Have two Anatolian Shepard Dogs, 5 bee hives, and a pair of Eclectus Parrots. Oh! I've got 11 Buff American eggs in the 'bator right now, but it looks like only 5 are fertile. Have some Buff Dundotte keets at my sister's right now. I love the tick-eaters!

OH! And about 20 head of Dorper sheep. We've got 3 steers that used to be bottle babies over the winter. Had 4, but the pushy one is in the freezer now. YUMMY!

Oh LORD! This isn't that other place, where everything has to be a pet, is it?

I belong to PETA--people eating tasty animals.

Vegetarian is an Indian word, meaning "poor hunter."
