    Default kentucky specks

I just read a little about a breed of chicken called Kentucky Specks. Can anyone tell me more about this breed? What I read was about bantams, are there standards also? Although I would be interested in bantams mostly.

    Thanks

Matt John of Shady Lane Poultry in Indiana used to have them before he was flooded out...you could check with him and he could probably provide you with info....I also belong to SPPA and there are a couple breeders listed in their breeders directory...contact them and I am sure they will provide you with all the info you want. Anyone who wants Specks from Matt is going to have to stand in line behind me, as I've had my order in with him for over two years now (ever since I brought them back to him from the OH National two years ago.)

They're a rather larger bantam chicken that have a feather pattern somewhat like an Exchequer Leghorn. They come in single comb and rose comb.

I spoke to Matt on Tuesday, and he's not even got his birds in breeding pens yet (he had to move last year, and not long afterwards lost some 70% of his flock to a huge flood.) So he's still rebuilding. Chances are good he won't be selling anything this year, just hatching for himself to get his numbers back up. But it won't hurt to get on his waiting list. And he does still have Specks (despite what Jane posted), I know because I hatched a bunch for him just after the flood.

You can contact him at info AT poultrymansupply DOT com (replace the AT with @ and the DOT with a . to get the proper email address.)

Bookworm and Katschicks, if you would email me privately at cedaridgefarm@aol.com, I would gladly share with you the names of the other 4 breeders listed in the SPPA breeders directory for KY. Specks. I know Matt did have them and they were pictured on his web pages.... and still maybe. That is where I first saw them.....Matt is a great guy and very knowledgable ...so I am sure he could answer questions for you even if he cannot provide you with stock right now...but it never hurts to ask! Matts website is where I read about the specks. When searching for the breed on yahoo I read about his loss from the floods, so I was looking for alternative sources. I life in West central Ohio so a trip someday to Ind. would be very doable. Thanks for everyones help.

Neil, I think they are kinda ugly, sorry guys, but to each his own....check out Matt Johns website - http://www.shadylanepoultry.com/bantams.html
to see a photo..large type bantams..sorta leghornly looking with kind of a big single comb and speckled or mottled colored in black, white and brown. I really don`t know much about them, just happened to see them on Matt`s page, since I am from Ky I noticed the name...never heard of them before that. Jane

Be vary wary of those who post auctions on internet auction sites without pictures of the actual birds being sold. The same person with the Kentucky Specks also has several other rare and extinct breeds for sale there also. I would doubt any of them resemble the breed advertised.

The oldtimers that gave me my first lessons in the show chicken game would have looked at them and said-
    Fine looking Banty!
