It is more fun on the Goose board. Pleople insist on imprinting goslings and then want to know how to quiet them when "Mama" has to do human things, then there is the rerun in September-October when the teenaged geese want to find there place in the pecking order and start picking fights with humangeese. Generally I have quit trying to tell people that it is a dumb thing to do.

Well, you know it's been a while since I've been around.....but, HAVE MERCY!! This is insane! Are people actually getting dumber?
I sell my farm products on a website called Local Harvest. There is a bunch from Fl that blog two or three times a week on the site. They've had chickens for a year....but they're experts. Talk about the blind leading the blind. Some of the garbage that they've posted is so far fetched and off the mark, that it's criminal. It's a shame because people make the assumption that they know what they're talking about. I just want to hurl.
I may have to fade out again...I'm having a tough time being "nice". Ya'll may have to rein me in.....

Well, Angela, if you need to be disciplined, I've got one of those hand feed ganders. I could send him over to smack you a few times.

Or maybe not. Geese are smart and after a couple of weeks here, he has stopped charging and hissing. He never shuts up and chuckles and burbles at me, non-stop, but it's been a couple of weeks since he has hissed at me. He now waits until his food is on the ground and I have moved away before he comes it to eat.

Also, it is apparently OK, now, for me to be close to the nest. At least with the 2 ganders. It's not OK with the goose who is sitting on the nest, but I find her growling to be within the bounds of acceptable behavior.

I do cringe when I see geese recommended as pets for families with small children.

And hey, Angela, I really do think my geese are rather fond of me. Or at least, they are fond of the bucket of grain and the fresh picked grass I bring them. I am finding them to be very sociable birds.

I loved my geese also, and they do recognize me to this day. I go by and call them by name on occasion....But I do NOT misconstrue that as affection. You and I are just the bringer of food, or the source of antagonism in some cases.

I ain't skeered!!!! You just bring that ole gander down, and I'll tune him up fer ya!

    Oregon Swedes....where were you!!!
I went and stirred up a s*#t storm with my comments....Hacked off a couple moderators. I imagine that I'll be invited to leave the forum. My feelings are so hurt.

Weren't you supposed to be watching me?

Yep, locked me out....So much for opposing view points....

Shucks I was going to point that option out to you. I hope you went out in a real blaze of glory! I was on my best behavior there once and was debating someone that been assigned a name like Crazy Chicken Lady (I don't know if you have to buy names like that or kiss up to a moderator to get one, it wasn't her username it was assigned like 'new member' is here) and I refered to her by that name well two moderators raised a real mess about that. So I PM'ed NIFFTY (owner??) and pointed out that the website had provided that name, it wasn't something I had come up with. I got off with a lecture about showing the proper respect for fellow members. Heck you can get in trouble for posting FACTS over there. Someone had made a comment about Monsato going down the tubes. I posted the earnings statement that was just released as well as the stock price. Again I got jumped on and I bluffed them down by stating that I was a Monsato lawyer and either show my facts Or We are going to sue BYC for every penny they were worth.

Well, I really have no excuse...I'm just a wicked B*&%h. One of the moderators told me to "bug off", and the other one took the opportunity to dress me down. The site admin locked down the thread before I could respond with my REAL opinion. Then the thread was edited to remove any of the moderator's questionable responses. Pretty chicken s*^t if you ask me. Don't type it if you can't/won't back it up.

I found it amusing that the people on the forum had such a pack mentality. It was the moderator (Speckled Hen) who actually decided that I had talked down to her. When she decided to flex her muscles, all the little wannabes figured that maybe they had been insulted also. It was funny. I therefore conclude that the Backward (oops, meant Backyard) Chicken forum has a Moderator problem. If they were a little more knowledgeable and less backward, maybe the neophytes could learn something.

If you read it closly (something I don't recommend unless you have a firm grip on your own idenity) they work hard to brain wash the mob into loyality. Moderators are Big Sisters (female Big Brothers who are the thought Police) the site is run strictly for profit, and the moderators are to keep the max number of people content to return to keep the numbers of hits and posts growing so the Ads keep paying big bucks. Many of the goose people are there to push their odd colored mixed breed flocks. I mostly skim the goose section looking for open minded newbes that really want to learn. Why people want to buy birds that they know nothing about is beyond me but I figure that I might be helping some poor geese somewhere.

Awhile back I defended BYC here but don't feel I can do that any longer. The thread Angela is referencing was/is really bizarre. I have thought about taking the governor off some comments so they'd bounce me but opted not to for a very self serving reason. The site includes an auction site for various poultry related items including hatching eggs. I sold over $1,000 worth of eggs in April. Some of them went for $10 per egg! I decided getting banned would be like shooting myself in the foot.

You hit the nail on the head. The moderators are the biggest problem. They do not moderate with an objective perspective- it is purely emotional and very opinionated. A few years ago when I used to post there, I was called out by TerrieLacy for bringing some facts to a Marans thread. I was publicly insulted by the her and had all of my posts removed while her posts, and the rest of the others attacking me, were left for all to read. At one point in the thread I was accused of being worried about losing business yet the main person making a stink over my posts was already starting an egg waiting list for the chicks she had just received!

After several more "warnings" and being told that I am being "watched", I finally gave up. Unfortunately, the members who are looking for an education are the ones who are really getting the short end of the stick here.

I agree that the auction portion is a great temptation. While there are some freaks on there I have also been surprised to see some pretty good looking stock now and then. Really, the same could be said for e-bay as well. I say do what you need to do and let the customers decide what they want to pay and leave it to them to educate themselves.

I sometimes check out the pheasant and peafowl forums - some decent info and not much "fluffy butt" stuff on them. If I feel like a good laugh I might skim through some of the others. I don't bother posting to the ridiculous threads because I figure those people are beyond help.

I thought that was you. I noticed that you went out on a ledge and tried to explain/defend my position. That was like throwing chum in the water. Speckled Hen went nuts...not that it was a far trip for her. I just really resent the "editing" for content. Talk about Ego Monsters. I remember when the folks on TPC were considered snobs and elitests.....How things have changed. BYC is nothing but a bunch of nasty wannabes. But it was fun. Stirring up controversy just for kicks and giggles, can be quite invigorating...LOL

I understand about the auctions. I don't have anything to sell at the moment (at least not yet), but Rog and I have been hatching some fairly decent Orps and Dutch. We really need to bring back Eggbid. I would be most happy to help.....I hate spending my money elsewhere.

Reality is that most people don't really want any help. They want to continue doing what they are doing with a minimum expenditure of effort (and that is not just with chickens).

People who are serious will do some research. I answer a few questions over there, but mostly that is a waste of time since the exact same question will be asked 3 times within a single hour. I figure if someone can't even read the first page that comes up before they ask, they really are not interested in information, they just want to talk about themselves. There is no reason for me to talk back at them.

But, on the bright side, their customers have a forum thats suits them so they aren't coming here to talk about house training their rooster. Also, there is a nice social group from my home state and if you look on the egg trains, there are quite a few breeders with some really nice birds.

That's for sure. She didn't even need to pack a bag.

This is where I get to gloat, knowing that I've been right about them all along. Not that there haven't been a few who have always agreed with me, but the difference between this thread and the others is that so far we haven't had one indignant twit who defends them. They often accuse me of being elitist because of my disgust with those BYC people. If that's true, I'm proud of it. I used to feel badly for those poor souls who paid too much for something, because they didn't know any better. As far as BYC is concerned, I now say, go for it, and make as much as you can off them. PT Barnum was right. The worst part about that site for me is that it's evidence of how so many people today prefer to remain ignorant, as long as there's a laugh and a giggle to be had. I deal with people every day who I try to educate about their animals. The percentages are similar as over at BYC. Most don't want to hear what I have to say, because it's not fun, or emotionally satisfying. Only very few intelligent people today want to learn. That's kind of depressing to me.

It's funny, but while I was reading the ridiculous content, I caught myself wondering why people didn't pick up a book. I know that's a bit old-fashioned, but I keep an extensive library for referrence. If I can't find what I need...then I may go to a forum. But I also understand that a good percentage of information floating around cyberspace, is tripe. Why would anyone depend on advice from someone with less or equivalent experience. That's absolute stupidity....or should I say "laziness". I guess it's easier to ask a question, then to crack open a book.

How's it going Patrick, been a while.

    EEEEKKKK! I Feel SO Stupid...

Ok, that's a subject line on the BYC.....

I think that I may becoming overly fascinated with the BYC. I just scan the homepage for the recent postings on the forum, and my fascination with the macabre is satisfied. Does that make me a "Bad Egg"?
