Vaccinations for ducks?
Hi. I have been reading Storey's guide to Ducks. I do plan to get chickens in a month or so. If I vaccinate the chickens for fowl pox do I need to vaccinate the ducks? I could not find any reference to vaccinations in duck. The ducks and chickens will share a barn. Not same pen. Not same water or feed. Thanks in advance.

There are very few diseases which are contagious from chickens to ducks. Fowl pox usually does not affect ducks. The comercial guys may vaccinate for a few things, but the vaccinations are not commonly available, and generally not needed in small well cared for backyard or exhibition flocks. You will have a hard time finding any animals that are less susceptible to contagious diseases than waterfowl.

Right on Patrick! Here in the meat bird belt of NC eggs are vaccinated at the Company hatchery only if they suspect there might be a disease in the area. The best Avian vets are either company employees or are on retainer so they have a lot of data on what might be around. Turkey are most likely to be vaccinated because of the production method used. Wild waterfowl are discouraged since they are believed to be the major vector of Avian influenza. Often they carry the virus without suffering from the disease.~gd
