Texas law requires getting buyers phone numbers? Info needed

OK, I personally think my feedstore is full of it - but I can't seem to find the information, so I thought I'd ask here.

Is it true that when you buy a chicken now at a feedstore (a full grown one, I assume, as I have bought chicks regularly with no issue) that you're required to give a phone number to the store "in case the state needs to get in touch with you again in case of an epidemic"?

If so, is there a number attached. I bought 7 eggers today, and 2 chicks (to go with the single chick that I hatched and didn't want to see raised alone) and suddenly I have to give a phone number?

I should have given a fake one. Stupid me, I didn't think about it.

And they never quit. In the 2010 census I got stuck with a 'LONG FORM' page after page of questions. I tried to dodge it by filing short forms. It didn't work when the taker came to my door she had the long form. I gave her another copy of the short form and called the cops for trustpassing. The deputy advised her to take the short form and leave which she did. Then the phone calls started. Finally on a rainy day in the fall I answered all the questions. From that they put me on a list of "highly educated people" big deal I have a BA in chemistry. The first questionform had on the cover that I was not required by law to answer so I tossed it, the second I marked 'I refuse to answer' and sent it back, #3"deceased" sent back. then the phone calls started I finally got someone to tell the truth if you refuse they just move you to the bottom of the list. If you answer the questions they start again every seven years until they confirm that you are dead! 18 calls so far, I am doing my part to keep jobs on the federal payroll!

While it wouldn't surprise me, I doubt that it is a law. I have never bought a chicken at a feed store but I have never heard about this one. You can try searching around on the TAHC website and see if you can find anything- http://www.tahc.state.tx.us/

I have gone over the Poultry regulations quite thoroughly and more than once but I was mostly looking at regulations regarding exhibition or off premise sales. I have never seen anything referring to what you are talking about.
You can refuse to give them your number, but then they can refuse to sell you the birds.

I had a similar experience a few years ago when I purchased medications at a farm supply store. I gave them my cell phone number 'cuz I don't like people I don't know calling me at home. Shortly afterwards I started getting all kinds of calls from telemarketers. Turned out the farm store was collecting and selling telephone numbers and other information to a national firm that used them to fill certain "demographics", in my case rural property owner, farm owner and business owner.It took about 18 months to get all of the calls stopped. They started at 8am and went until 9pm. At least I could shut the ringer off on the cell phone.

I remember watching people coop in at the Ft. Worth Stock Show a few years ago & saw a state vet at the door collecting $25 from each exhibitor to ''inspect'' their birds. However, he allowed everyone to coop in ( & give them time to spread any germ they might be hiding ), THEN he walked down the aisles & glanced at them. Pretty slick operation. Profitable, too.

Another thought....People in the Northeast that bought chicks this spring from TSC & other feed stores have been cautioned that chicks that came from Mt. Healthy Hatchery were infected with Salmonella. Could Texas have been involved there ? That state seems to panic easily. LOL

There have been lots of complaints this spring about TSC requiring phone numbers and requiring a minimum purchase of chicks. That seems to be in whatever state they are located in and not just in Texas.

Since I would not buy chicks from a feed store, I have no idea whether the non-TSC stores in Oregon are requiring phone numbers. They get my phone number when I buy feed, because it is on my checks.

Oh wait a minute. I've had ducklings shipped to me this spring and they all required my phone number. So the post office could call me when they arrived, but I have no idea what else they might use the phone number for.

Just a stray thought. Maybe they have to keep track of who bought chicks so some cheat can't buy chicks from a neighbor, have their kids get sick, and sue TSC for selling them a sick bird. Their records would show that the cheat didn't buy birds from them.

If I'm not mistaken, they tried that here in MO a couple of years ago. It was all part of the Dept of Ag backdoor plan to register all premises for NAIS. They could not force us to register the farms....but if you acquired poultry or other livestock from a business, you were required to provide all of your information...name, rank, and serial number, at point of sale.
It did not fly here. At least, not legislatively. That's not to say that it was not started in other states. The general public is not necessarily informed as to what is law, and what is "wishful thinking". Also, bear in mind....cities and counties can inforce their own little policies. Therefore, it becomes local statute.

I tend to be very suspicious of Big Brother, even the one next door and down the street. A friend of mine went through three or more contacts from the 2010 census people. He kept sending it back with just the number of people living at his address, maybe his name. Finally one came to his door. He gave them heck and only gave the same information again. They will ware you down if they can. A man came to my door for the census and I didn't have any problem. He had to as the questions and I said with each one I am not required to answer that and he marked it accordingly. If I don't think someone really needs my phone number I say I don't have a phone. When they request a second number on my check I don't give that. They get my driver's license number if they require an ID. They don't need anymore with the address after all the bank has all my information. We can expect lots more the big brother thing. We need to stand together and refuse to give our info when it is not required and demand to know why they are wanting it if we think it may not be required. Social Security numbers are not supposed to be used outside the social security system. I have refused to give mine successfully. And have refused to do business with phone companies that require it. Some folks tell me it is no big deal. And I tell them if it is no big deal for them to have it then it is no big deal for them not to have it. I guess I am a rebel at heart.
