You guys, this guy breeds poison dart frogs too. While it's not particularly difficult or unheard of, it does take some specific knowledge and attention to detail. From a poultry point of view, where you simply open a bag of store bought feed, put a male and female together and collect eggs, breeding some of the things that he does really is an achievement.

Aw, Patrick, you're making me blush. I actually started keeping poultry to help me relax from the frog business. Then, I discovered the breed club politics and realized it was the wrong place to look for solace! The toucan chicks are doing well, starting to stand up today and they are nearly feathered in. It will be hard to ship them off to their new home in a few weeks. The parents of these just finished laying another three-egg clutch and the curl crests are also setting on three eggs with a fourth possible tomorrow. These are likely the last cycles of the year and we are hopeful they do well. We will be adding one more pair of birds this fall which will bring us up to 5 pair. Next year could be a very busy one. Here's a shot from today:

They're amazing little creatures! What a gift you have! I'm enjoying watching these develop immensely. Thank you for sharing it. This is something most people never get to see.

What a transformation! Now they are actually cute!

Is there a particular reason why they are separated and not in a single "nest"?

Toucans have a "pumping" action that they do with their throat to draw the food down from the parents beak. It is actually pretty freakish! When they are small, they can actually "crawl" up the pipette using their throat muscles, lifting themselves out of the cup if you are not careful. If you have the chicks together they can mistakenly use this action on a sibling with horrible results. The parents keep them fairly satiated so there is not a problem with this in the nest. Again, we are such poor replacements for the parents. It is incredibly fascinating to discover these seemingly disjointed, bizarre, traits that all wind up coming together to create the perfect organism.

With those large open beaks, they are starting to put me in mind of some of my kin folk....LOL

What a triumph. Thank you so much for sharing.

I am in Costa Rica right now and will be heading into Panama later today for a week so will not be able to post pictures until I get back. From what I understand, they are fine looking young birds now!

Well, they did it... they grew up and weaned. They don't look much like they used to.

I am pretty certain they are both males but I have not had them DNA sexed. The breeder they are going to can use them no matter what so they are sexing them at their end. Next week I will be pulling two curl crest chicks. Those were two weeks old today but I have a business trip this weekend so I want to leave them until that is done. They are doing a great job so far this time.
