    Default Doves and Pigeons

I know that this question may seem silly but I am really confused. Dictionaries are not very helpful here, either. How would you explain to your students the difference between a pigeon and a dove?

    Thanks,
    freya

Hi Bobbie. You just asked a question I, too, would like to know how t tell which is a pigeon and which a is a dove. Hopefully someone who knows more than I do will see this and answer.

It's a good question, but there isn't a good answer. It just all depends on what someone decided to use for the common name. The Pasenger Pigeon resembled the Mourning Dove in color and shape, yet they were named differently. In German, dove is duif, pigeon is tauben, yet some domestic pigeon breeds have the term duif added to their German name. All of our domestic pigeons descended from the Rock Dove. White dove release companies use white homing pigeons, because most brides wouldn't be caught dead having lowly pigeons released at their weddings.

Thank you, Patrick. I am still looking for a companion for my white, dark eyed, feather legged dove/pigeon. I didn't bookmark the site where I found them for about $15.00. I have not been able to get back to it. Since I don't have any ambition to breed them I don't want to spend a lot. He hangs out with my chickens and eats out side with them where I scatter grain and roost on the only board at the 8' level in the hen house. I don't look forward to catching him to treat him for mites.

If it's featherlegged, it's a pigeon, maybe even a mixed breed the way you describe it. There are no varieties of domestic doves which have feathered legs or feet.

Thank you Patrick. That certainly gives me a better idea what I have. It is beautiful. It will fly within inches of me to get out of the hen house. It doesn't act particularly afraid, just doesn't want to be handled.

These include species of doves and pigeons. These birds sell at huge profits to the owners.

Hmm ! its a easy question and you can easily find this answer in Google . I think that there is not very much difference between them.

Both doves and pigeons belong to the same family of birds called Columbidae. The difference between doves and pigeons lies in their size. Doves are smaller and have a pointed tail while pigeons are larger in size and have a rounded tail.
