Major quail help
Hello all I am in need of information and guidance and this looks like a good place to find both. I am 21in years of age and recently married to my wonderful wife and im looking to venture out my farming. We are both employed with flexible jobs and I am partners with my father and our cattle farm. I have a million questions on raising quail and I don't know where to start. I have a 250x30 chicken house that I could have in decent shape for around $10,000. I already have water and electricity run to the house but no equipment. I have done research on the cost of feed and chicks and the growth period but I don't know anything about the process or the equipment needed. My wife and I are both commited to this idea and have little overhead at the moment. We are wanting to find something that can grow into a decent profit. My main concerns here are prices of equipment, do we need to raise recreational or meat birds, can I keep chicks coming in, and most of all can I get rid of them. Your first decision is sporting or meat. Otherwise, there's not enough space to answer your questions. The breeding and raising of Bobwhite is completely different then the breeding and raising of coturnix or other meat varieties. So, you'll have to determine which way you're going before I can help you. But, I've done both, and can tell you that meat varieties are more sustainable..but it would depend on the market that you develop and how far you're willing to go.

Does anyone know of the late Claude McAllister's connections ( 7 Oakes Game Farm )? Claude used to ship thousands of quail eggs to the Middle East. Possibly someone at APWS (American Pheasant & Waterfowl Assoc. ) would also have info.

There's a great market for quail eggs....They were profitable for me, both processed and for hatching. A small flock of coturnix can put out a whole lot of eggs. The hatching eggs for the Bobwhite also fetch a handsome price...or at least they used to. I'm not really up on the pricing nowadays.

I looked into raising dressed quail for the local restaurants, but discovered that they had to be processed in a licensed plant. With no local poultry processing plant and not enough money to build my own, I never got past that point. Too bad, because my area has a lot of high priced restaurants that would have provided an excellent market for dressed quail.
So, I think your first task is to find out what the law is in your area about selling dressed poultry. If you can't sell quail meat without a license processing plant and you don't have a local plant that will dress your birds for you, then meat birds are off the table.
At one time (decades ago, and again in my own state) there was some good money in raising pheasants for release during hunting season. But fish and wildlife stopped paying for them and that market disappeared, along with dozens of pheasant farms. So, I suggest that if you are planning on raising quail for release that you make sure there is someone who will pay for them. Perhaps local hunt clubs will buy birds.

All poultry is regulated by the Dept of Ag in one form or another.
Again, he needs to decide which way he's going to go. If he choses to go the meat route, he can build a processing unit that will pass inspection. The plans are available throught the university extension offices and the Dept of Ag. Been there. It just depends on how deep he wants to get. Producing meat birds is by far easier. Coturnix reach butcher weight in 6-8 weeks, require no special accomodations, and are pretty docile if maintained properly.
There are also plenty of hunting operations that buy bobwhite. But these avenues have to be explored and commitments made. You are also required to have a permit to raise them. They are slow to mature...which means you have to raise them out. They require special accomodations, and in general...are very expensive to maintain. Not to mention the fact that they are vicious little beasts.
He could also get stupid and do both....that's what I did....LOL
Just bear in mind how expensive game bird feed is, and how much the little buggers are going to eat. Either way he goes, he has to have a bunch of them.
