Hello, I have a hen around the age of 5. Yesterday, she was lying down a lot, fluffing her feathers and looked to be straining to lay an egg. I read everything I could on egg bound chickens, and she fit the profile. I sat her in warm water, then put mineral oil in her vent, then put her in a wire cage with steam under her and 2 hours later~~~~nothing.
She was then given an injection on oxitosin, calcium gluconate and trostaelandin. Hour later~~~ nothing.
Ok, so then, my husband put mineral oil on his pinky and went in her vent looking fir an egg and didn't find one. What he found was a mass-like substance. He said that it was a hard, rubbery type of structure, but not an egg.
She was then given an xray and there was nor an egg, but you could see calcium deposits.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on with this hen? We are simply perplexed.
Any help, comments, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You could have your vet do exploratory surgery.
If the hen has had trouble with laying eggs once, she will most likely have trouble again. There is some sort of mis-function in her system. How many times do you want to pay to go through with this?
Or, since it sounds like she is an extremely loved pet, you could have the vet spay her when he goes in to check out the mass.
Are you actually going to a vet who specializes in poultry, or are you using a dog and cat vet who is simply guessing because he doesn't know anything about chickens?
I AGREE! Many years ago we had a real duck lover on this site {in fact the Host added her website link on here because she was such a good duck info source, I'm having a senior moment on her username or website except it had the Rubber Ducky song for music (Darm Now I will be humming that tune all day)] Any way she had a duck with a problem like your chicken, She spent a ton of money on that duck with a grood Av. Vet, but it died anyway. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to put them down. Remembered that I still had her site saved it was Quackers username duck named 'mutt' sick for TWO YEARS BEFORE DIEING IN 2000 RIP MUTT I wonder if Quackers is still alive?

Thanks everyone for your advice. She unfortunately died. She was posted and there was a structure "like" a soft boiled egg with nothing else in the tube behind it. It did not have a shell. Has anyone else ever heard of this? I thought it was really strange. What could have caused this and could there have been any way to prevent it? Thanks.
Make sure any laying bird has a source of grit & calcium ( oyster shell ). It was probably just an anomaly, thin shells can also cause problems like egg binding & peritonitis.
"Irridesa'' was her posting handle. I'm ashamed to say I can't think of her real name. She retired from the Navy & was restoring an old house, by herself, in San Diego. Her folks lived about 50 miles from me in NY & when her Mom died, she & her boyfriend drove out. They stopped here for a nice visit. We corresponded for several years, but I'm sorry to say, we've lost touch.
She told me to call her Mitzy [not sure of the spelling of that or her last name] She used "WebTV" But I used to telephone her in the evening when I was trying to learn about egg dyeing using the old wax method. I lost my book of address and Phone numbers in the torando here a year ago. And my memory is shot too....~gd
I had a hen once who passed thisin the nest box. It looked and smelled like cooked egg white. Never got it again and didn't have a death.
