I just got back from the show at Syracuse and must say what a good time I had being back at a show again. I used to show when I was in my teens and now that I'm retired, I'll probably buy some birds, maybe start showing. Not seeing the ones I was used to seeing was a little sad. Walter Bass and his Mottled Houdans were some of the best in the US. Henry Penner and his White Rocks were also. Those two names are probably unknown to most if not all on this forum. Art Shellenburg {not sure of the spelling} was also dedicated to the fancy. I was amazed at the amount of women with birds. And youngsters with birds. Good for you! You add what was missing when I was showing back in the 60's. When I was in my teens most of the people showing were from the "old school" and string men. Walter Bass talked to me of the "Garden" and the big Boston show. Don't mean to ramble on but this a good day spent with good people. Can't wait for the next show. Gary

Barbara Piper of Michigan used to show some really good Mottled Houdons and may be able to direct you to someone that has them now. With regard to White Rocks, there are some really good ones being shown in the midwest.
If you can attend the A.P.A. National Meet in September (Belvidere, Illinois), or the Ohio National at Columbus in November, you should be able to find what you are looking for. Good luck, and welcome back to the fancy! |
